Puppy killer Nathan Thompson arrested on warrant and granted strict bail

Nathan Francis Thompson, 29, spent Wednesdaynight in jail before being granted strict conditional bail in Maitland Local Court on Thursday.

Thompson hadfailed to appear in Kurri Kurri Local Court last Thursday and was convicted in his absence ofeight offences, including two counts of failing to comply with a court order in relation to the possession of an animal.

Thompson had been warned by a magistrate on August 30 that: “You must attend, no further adjournments will be given”.

And when he failed again to appear last week,Magistrate Alan Railton convicted him of three counts of driving while disqualified, driving a motor vehicle with an illicit drug in his system, possession of a prohibited drug and the two counts of failing to comply with a court order, which relate to having a dog in the car with him on two occasions when police pulled him over.

Mr Railton issued a warrant for his arrest and Thompson remained at large for the best part of a week before he was picked up on Wednesday.

He appeared in Maitland Local Court on Thursday in handcuffs where Magistrate John Chicken granted him bail on a number of strict conditions, including daily reporting to police, a curfew and a $1000 surety.

He will next appear in Cessnock Local Court on October 17.

Thompson was jailed for at least12 months, upheld on appeal,in 2015 after he used a brick to bludgeonnine bull terrier-cross pups to death.

The case triggered widespread outrage in the Hunter.
